Blogiquotes – George Carlin

2012 January 29

“The owners of this country know the truth – it’s called the American dream, because you gotta be asleep to believe it! “

The impassioned words of five time Grammy winning stand-up comedian and social critic George Denis Patrick Carlin (1937 – 2008) are featured in today’s Blogiquote.

Throughout his career Carlin was noted for his black humor as well as his thoughts on politics, the English language, psychology and religion. While less known in the UK as political comedian Bill Hicks, Carlin made huge waves in the US, his insightful societal reflections pushing the boundaries and spurring on other comics to discuss difficult political topics in their routines.

Prior to his death in 2008 Carlin’s work had become particularly hard-hitting and this no-nonsense tirade in particular certainly pulls no punches and demonstrates how on the ball and awake to these issues he had become. During this three minute clip, each sentence is packed with truth and, despite the serious nature of the subject matter, he still gets some laughs and the message is extremely powerful when delivered in this manner.

Carlin describes the gradual destruction of the USA by a fantastically wealthy club of elite US power brokers, the so called “owners of this country” who he says control politics and the media, own the best land and resources and buy and pay for politicians. He also claims they have infiltrated the schools system, diluting education standards with each generation in order to create a dumbed-down public that will willingly do the jobs they don’t want to do, while remaining subservient enough not to ask too many difficult questions.

Carlin took second place on the Comedy Central list of the 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time in 2004 ahead of the likes of Lenny Bruce and behind Richard Pryor. During the year of his death he was also awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour. Please watch the clip below and let me know your thoughts, it contains explicit language.
